CANTON, Ohio — A Canton police officer was dragged by a vehicle following a traffic stop early Tuesday and was released after the vehicle crashed and his gun fired a shot.
Mario J. Pratt, 32, of Akron, was arrested on charges of felonious assault on a peace officer, abduction, resisting arrest and traffic offenses.
No one was seriously injured during the incident, Capt. Dave Davis said.
Officers attempted to stop a Ford F150 pickup truck for speeding around 12:45 a.m. Tuesday in the 1200 block of Louisiana Avenue NW. During the stop, the driver got out of the vehicle, became combative and tried to leave the scene.
One officer tried to stop him and ended up in a chokehold before being pulled halfway inside and outside the vehicle as it began to move. The other officer attempted to use a Taser, which didn’t work.
The vehicle sped away, crashed into another vehicle, and the officer in the chokehold grabbed his gun and struggled with Pratt for control of the weapon, Davis said.
Body camera footage shows the truck coming to a stop, and then the gun can be heard firing.
The officer, who was not seriously hurt, will be on administrative leave while the incident is investigated, Davis said.
