The family of a man shot and killed by Long Beach police during a 2017 stolen vehicle pursuit will receive $845,000 from the city of Long Beach in a settlement approved by the City Council on Tuesday, Feb. 5.
The parents of Juan Manuel Avila Jr. filed a wrongful-death lawsuit against the city claiming officers used excessive force when they shot the 20-year-old at the end of an April 2017 chase from Long Beach to Bellflower.
The Los Angeles County District Attorney’s Office ruled in a report released in August 2018 that the four officers acted in lawful defense. All are still employed by the Long Beach Police Department.
